Thousands of students to join human chain, pledge to draw inspiration from Swami Vivekananda

·  UP Governor Ram Naik to administer oath
·  Students recreate book of Vivekananda in hand-written format

Mumbai, Sept 17: Pledge by thousands of students to proactively involve themselves in the social welfare activities, a human chain involving hundreds, unveiling of a book on Swami Vivekananda in a hand-written format and an exhibition.

A city-based leading group of educational institutions has chalked out a series of innovative initiatives to inspire the students with the teachings and life of Swami Vivekananda, all under an ambitious national campaign called `Yuva for Seva’ that was recently launched to engage students in welfare activities.

Hon’ble UP Governor Ram Naik will administer the oath to thousands of students at the Vivekanand Education Society (VES) campus, Chembur in the city, on September 18, besides joining the human chain with the students around the sprawling campus. He will also unveil a huge statue of Swami Vivekananda at the campus, apart from visiting an exhibition of paintings, teachings and crafts about Swami, created by the primary school students.

Hundreds of junior school students have also reproduced the pages of book ``Narendra to Vivekananda’’ about the saint-philosopher, in a hand-written format to motivate the students. The big pages have been compiled as a voluminous handwritten copy which will be formally unveiled by the Governor on the occasion.

“The teachings of Swami Vivekananda as a philosopher and nationalist are always relevant to the society as a whole and students in particular. We are taking these initiatives to instill the values of the great Saint among the younger generation who are going to drive the course of our future,” said VES secretary Amar Asrani.

The programme has been planned as part of the recently launched national campaign `Yuva for Seva’ under which the students will join a series of social welfare activities like skin donation, blood donation, outreach programmes, adoption of the villages, visiting of orphanages, legal aid services, health camps, and awareness creation. The campaign was launched by Union HRD Minister Smt. Smriti Irani who promised to include the same in the proposed new education policy of the government. VES has 25 institutions and has over 18000 students.

In such a scenario, I appreciate ‘The World Peacekeepers Movement’ for their various initiatives on world peace. ‘Peacekeeping’ and ‘Peacemaking’ is an individual responsibility. It is important for individuals to become agents of Peace. I feel ‘Peace’ should be included in the primary school curriculum so that the foundation is laid right from the start. When we think of Peace, we think of absence of ‘strife’. But various other situations like personal vices, personal issues threaten peace. It is therefore important for each of us to become agents of Peace.”
After accepting the Humility Peacekeeper Award, Dr. A R K Pillai, Founder President of Indian Development Foundation (formerly Indian Leprosy Foundation) said “I thank Dr. Huzaifa for his kindness. I appreciate ‘The World Peacekeepers Movement’ for their vision of world peace through peace values.I feel privileged to be associated with Peace. A little compassion and humility goes a long way in saving someone’s life. Therefore, it is important for the youth of today to stand up for the rights of others with humility and compassion.I wish you all good times, healthy times, prosperous times and a good life.
“Post receiving the Forgiveness Peacekeeper Award, Kia Scherr, Author and world-renowned Inspirational speaker said, “I am honoured to receive the ‘Forgiveness’ award and will continue to work towards raising the peace index in the world with love, compassion and forgiveness. I am glad to know that ‘The World Peacekeepers Movement’ highlights the importance of Forgiveness and human values for attaining world peace. Forgiveness is the first step in creating Peace. Forgiving the unforgivable is difficult but it is very critical for world peace. Revenge attracts more hatred and more terrorism. Terrorism destroys life. We will always find a way other than violence. No terrorist is powerful whatsoever, no matter how big the weapon. After my husband and daughter were killed in Mumbai’s 26/11 terrorists attacks, I chose to forgive the terrorists. This incident has made me a catalyst for ‘Peace’ and ‘Forgiveness’. I invite Mumbai’s youth to take this stand for ‘Forgiveness’ and share it with everyone to make a difference for world peace.”
The youth of Mumbai were enthralled by some awe-inspiring performances on Peace. Underprivileged kids from Khel Khel Mein also put up a wonderful performance revolving around the seven human values. Khel Khel Mein is an initiative by Wockhardt Foundation led by Dr. Huzaifa, the CEO and Trustee. GAIL was the major sponsor for the event.
