Program aims to teach students the importance of wildlife and the skill of photography.

Rajasthan, 21st March, 2015: Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics (MAAC) celebrated World Forestry Day by organizing a unique photography expedition tour called MAAC KLICKS for 35 students in the Sariska National Park. MAAC, in collaboration with the photography expedition tour, DCP Expeditions guided and trained students in the art of photography. This subsequently taught them the importance of forests and the flora and fauna that resides in them.
Located among the Aravalli Hills and home to ‘Project Tiger’, the park covers an area of 800 square kilometres and is one of the first reserves in the world to have successfully relocated tigers. It was known to be the hunting reserve of the Royal Family of Alwar in Rajasthan before being declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1958.
Tanmay Haldar, a nature enthusiast, avid traveller and skilled wild life photographer, led the training program. He is a highly acclaimed photographer that has been recognized on various forums such as National Geographic Traveller, Canon India, and Smart Photography Magazine.  He was also a panellist at the DCP Expeditions.  The photography competition will allow students to nurture their creative streak that is an essential component in the animation, media and entertainment industry.
Mr. Shajan Samuel Sr. Vice President MAAC and National Head of Events for MAAC says, “The event was  a unique opportunity for students to leave the classroom and actively engage in a surrounding that would allow them to not only hone their photography skills but also to test their creativity and imagination in a real life setting. TSM crafts Cathedral & John Connon School’s music curriculum

TSM crafts Cathedral & John Connon School’s music curriculum

The two-year course on Western Music will be introduced as the sixth subject in the ICSE syllabus this academic year

MUMBAI, 23rd March, 2015: One of India’s most prestigious educational institutions, The Cathedral & John Connon School has collaborated with Mumbai’s music education visionaries, True School of Music (TSM), to introduce Western Music as the sixth subject in the ICSE syllabus from this academic year.
TSM has launched three two-year courses with Cathedral School that commence this year with Class 9 students. In all three courses, students can opt for lessons in keyboard or vocal techniques that are at par with Grade 4 of Trinity College, London’s curriculum.

The difference in the courses has largely to do with the specializations opted for by the students. The ICSE Western Music course teaches one the basics of the techniques while also strengthening one’s understanding of Western Music and musical influences. The ICSE + TSM Producer course teaches all of that and also offers song writing and music production 101 in the first year and composition and production of an album in the second year. The ICSE + TSM Performer course offers the student a chance to be a part of a performance workshop for any instrument at the True School of Music.

Says Ashutosh Phatak, co-founder of True School of Music, “TSM's vision has always been about inspiring the next generation of musicians. I’m delighted with Cathedral & John Connon School’s support, encouragement and enthusiasm in offering the best education to their students. More schools should add music to their curriculum, because the music industry in the country is growing and with it, the employment opportunities.”

About The True School of Music:
The True School of Music is India’s first comprehensive institute of contemporary music. It provides music education of the highest calibre, enabling students to take their musical passion and turn it into successful careers. Established on 1st September 2013, TSM aims to train the next generation of musicians, artists, producers, sound engineers, composers and DJs to feed the increasing demand for music within India’s burgeoning music and entertainment industries.

British Council Press Release: A digital student home

A digital student home

Mumbai, 20th March 2015: Red lorry, yellow lorry. It was simple enough to repeat for K. Madhavan and his friends when Neil Sarkar, Head, English Language Centre, South India, British Council, said it slowly. Then, Sarkar upped the ante and increased the speed. Now Madhavan and his friends at the AIM for Seva Free Student Home (FSH) in Tindivanam felt the pinch and dropped out of the race one by one. But they now have a new-found appreciation for the language, and many of the students promised him that they would improve their English language skills over a period of time as they begin to interact with British Council LearnEnglish for Schools DVD.

LearnEnglish for Schools programme provides a DVD with self-access English learning resources for children in age group 5 to 15 years. It is mapped to the National Curriculum Framework, India and provides a learning pathway from Class 1 to Class 10, making it ideal for contexts where the learners are situated in semi-urban or rural areas  where access and internet connectivity is limited. Through the programme, students learn English in a fun and interactive way through songs, stories, grammar videos etc. As the programme is engaging and self-paced, it leads to better retention and understanding of concepts.

Inaugurating the programme, Sarkar explained the importance of learning English in today’s world, and the edge that it would give students in their lives. ‘’ With potentially millions of teachers and learners across the world aspiring to learn English, there is only one way that we can achieve that ambition and that is through the exploitation of  digital platforms that can make English, and English learning opportunities, available to all”. He also explained about the British Council’s role in promoting English through development of a range of digital resources which provide an innovative and engaging way to learn English.

Meera Rajagopalan, Chief Manager of Programmes and Communications, AIM for Seva, explained the concept behind the Free Student Home. “The programme fits in neatly with AIM for Seva’s concept of all-round development,” she said. “Next year, I hope that the children will be up here on stage, conducting the programme in English.”
The pilot phase of LearnEnglish for Schools DVD is part of AIM for Seva’s commitment to provide children residing in the homes with access to learn English after school once they are back at their Student home. On successful implementation of the programme, it will be expanded to AIM for Seva’s 104 FSH across the country.

Notes to the editor:

Bringing the Arts into the curriculum
The British Council’s arts education programme brings the World Voice Project and Drama in Classroom to Mumbai from 16 to 18 March 2015

As part of a three-year project in arts education, the British Council, UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities will host the first series of  workshops with school teachers in Mumbai to help nurture the use of music and drama to teach the curriculum. The workshops, including the World Voice Project (WVP) and an introduction to the Drama in Classroom Project (DCP), will be held at the British Council office in Mumbai from 16 - 18 March 2015.

The 3-day training aims at promoting an art-integrated learning approach through music and drama with the World Voice Project (WVP) and the Drama in Classroom Project (DCP) respectively. It will present singing and drama as additional pedagogical tools in the resource kit for teachers to facilitate wider-curriculum learning; in addition to, re-introducing arts into the everyday lives of students. The training aims at nurturing more teachers to promote Arts Education and Art Integrated Learning (AIL) approach in their respective educational institutions and the state (at large).

The workshop is being organised in collaboration with the Kendriya Vidyala Sangathan and will be attended by 50 teachers from KVS and another 10 independent teachers and trainers, further about 60 students (class 3-5) from the KVS schools will attend a special session on 17th March 2015.

The workshop will also be attended by well-known musician and singer Mohit Chauhan who has been championing the World Voice Project in India on the second day of the workshop on 17th March 2015.  A widely acknowledged singing icon, Mohit will be singing WVP songs with the students and speaking about his WVP journey since its launch in March 2013.  He will be joined by well-known singer - musician and the World Voice Champion from Senegal Metzo Djatah.

The World Voice Project, launched in 2013 in the UK, is the British Council’s pilot arts education programme which nurtures cultural understanding through a sharing of folk music.  The project supports young people to develop musicality and contributes to wider learning through singing as a fundamental global expressive art. The Project is currently being implemented in 12 countries across the globe and is championed by well-known musicians and singers in each country.

So far, around 1500 teachers have been trained across India in the states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Bihar, Sikkim and Meghalaya. The states have further cascaded the programme to another 500 teachers and integrated the training module with their own state’s early learning (reading, writing and arithmetic) campaigns. An estimated 200,000 children have been exposed to the programme through their teachers. This is the first time the workshop is being conducted in Mumbai, with the aim to expand the programme in West India.

The Arts Education programme of the British Council through the WVP and the DCP, is a pioneering endeavour of the organisation to support the government in its efforts to promote education for all, in the most creative and effective manner; especially with reference to the RTE Act and NCF 2005.

Through this programme the British Council along with its partners NCERT, SCERT, RMSA and SSA encourage children to enjoy their school with more opportunity for engaging with the arts. Arts provide the opportunity to children to build skills such as communication, leadership, confidence and team builiding. In today's competitive world arts brings about a well rounded personality of a child and are as important as English, Math or Science. The three- year project hopes to reach out to ten states in India and to about 20 countires across the world including in Africa, Asia and America.

II PU exams kicks-off with moderate Chemistry and easy Business Studies

-          By
Dr.Milind C, Vice-President, Deeksha Network
II PU students breathe an easy start. While Chemistry paper was moderate and easy to score marks, Business studies turned out to be a complete easy paper.

In the chemistry paper, an average student can score up to 40-45 marks and students who were performing consistently in their college exams can easily score a centum. The question paper pattern was same as the last years but the level of difficulty was increased by 5% especially in the questions where students had a choice. Students who had thoroughly studied the question bank can score good marks. Overall, the paper followed the prescribed blueprint and appeared easy for the students, said Dr.Milind, Vice President, Deeksha Network.

“It wasn’t a hard shell to crack! The Chemistry paper was pretty easy and direct. Questions were clear without any ambiguity. I might score close to 70.” said Madan T, student of Deeksha Network. Karthik Shetty, student of Deeksha Network said, “Surprisingly many questions from the question banks had come. Moreover it was similar to the previous year’s paper. I will score straight 70 in Chemistry.”

Business Studies was an easy paper. An average student can score up to 50 marks. As it was a new syllabus, paper appeared completely fresh for the students but almost similar to the question papers uploaded on the PU board website. 70-80% of paper was based on the question banks. Overall many students can score centum in Business studies.

Sukruth V, student of Deeksha Network said, “The paper was too easy, we could complete the paper before the end time. Questions were pretty much direct and question banks helped us a lot. I might score more than 90”.
