Press Release

OVER 45% POPULATION OF INDIA WILL BE IN URBAN AREAS BY 2030

IIHMR Delhi develops Capacities through Management Development Programme on Urban Health

§  Delhi is the most urbanized with 97.5% population urbanized (MoUD)
§  The percentage of urban population to total population in the country is 31.2% (Census 2011)
§  Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu continues to lead with the highest Urban Population
§  Government to spend over $15 billion to remake 100 cities in the country over 5 years
§  India needs  to increase its GDP contribution to over 1% in healthcare services and still lacks the same till date
§  Over 58% of the healthcare expenditure is Out of patient’s pocket, only 10% is attributed to insurance and healthcare services
§  Rural villages in Delhi have converted into over 135 urban villages

New Delhi, June 27, 2016: With the population exploding and breaking Rural and Urban boundaries, there is a tremendous need to develop infrastructure, skill and many other aspects for an overall economic development of the country. This is not only required for the Rural population, but also the Urban population which comprises of over 31.2% of the total population in the country, which has in turn given rise to the Smart Cities Mission by the Government of India. In contribution to development of skills and capacities required for the Smart Cities Mission, The International Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR) Delhi concluded a  5 day long Management Development Programme (MDP) on Urban Health  in June 2016

Dr. B S Singh, Associate Professor, IIHMR Delhi said, “The dynamics of our country have changed over the past decade. We have realized that the population is ever exploding and the boundaries between Rural and Urban have become extremely thin. The country will soon have over 45% of the population residing in Urban areas by 2030. The government has therefore realized that this calls for the need to develop Smart Cities. Also, to develop a smart city one needs to understand that care must be taken to realize the most pressing needs of any city and create opportunities to improve the life of people residing in these cities. Thus, the government will be spending over $15 billion in the next 5 years to remake around 100 cities as ‘Smart Cities’ in the country. This also calls for better public health delivery systems through more contributions through the GDP on the healthcare services.”

Dr. B S Singh added, “Till date the total contribution from the GPD for healthcare services is less than 1%. Under the health coverage, about 58% of the total healthcare expenditure is from the patient’s pocket, out of which 10% is for health services and Insurance only. According to the Economic Survey 2015- 2016, there are major challenges in the public healthcare delivery systems such as the coverage in maternal and child health along with the lack of skilled personnel. This calls for the need of developing capacities in the Urban health segment. IIHMR Delhi focuses of key areas of Research, Academia and Training. Under training, the IIHMR Delhi performs various Management Development Programmes to build and develop capacities especially in the healthcare segment. Understanding the rising need of the Urban Population and the development of the Smart Cities concept, IIHMR Delhi introduced the Management Development Programme on Urban Health to build capacities for the overall economic development thereby contributing to the Smart Cities Mission.”

Dr. Singh also concluded that the Government has been making increasing efforts to improve the Urban Scenario. According to Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) a total of Rs. 19,55,343.15 crore have been made through ongoing PPP investments in projects of  Solid Waste Management, Water Supply, Parking Lots and Spaces, Roads/Flyovers, Mass Rapid Transportation System, Other Urban Transport t develop the urban space. Also, programmes such as Employment Through Skills Trainings and Placement (EST&P) have been developed to provide skill training to the Urban Poor for market based jobs and self-employment.

The government has also begun programmes such as Self Employment programmes (SEP) designed to focus on financial assistance to individuals/group of urban poor for setting up gainful self-employment ventures/micro-enterprises, suited to their skills, training, aptitude and local conditions. No minimum or maximum educational qualification is prescribed for the selection of beneficiaries. Other programmes under the National urban Livelihood Mission are, Schemes of shelters for Urban homeless, Support to urban street vendors etc.

IIHMR Delhi offers a two-year full-time Postgraduate Program with specialization in Hospital Management, Health Management and Health Care Information Technology Management with a total annual intake of 120 students. It is a flagship educational program which aims to develop trained professional managers with requisite skills in planning, implementation, operational management, diagnosing and problem solving, consultancy and entrepreneurship with a view to prepare them to manage hospitals and healthcare institutions in developing countries, both in the public and the private sectors, and to meet their rising demand.

IIM Kozhikode in association with RBI,Thiruvananthapuram conducted a seminar on the 'Role of private remittances in the socioeconomic scenario of Kerala’ 25 June 2016, IIM Kozhikode Campus

Kozhikode, 25 June, 2016: Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK), in association with Reserve Bank of India Thiruvananthapuram, conducted a Seminar on the 'Role of private remittances in the socioeconomic scenario of Kerala’ in its Kozhikode campus on June 25, 2016 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm which was attended by more than 250 delegates comprising faculty and students of colleges and universities, researchers, bankers, traders, businesspersons, consultants and other interested members of the public.
The delegates were welcomed by Prof. Rudra Sensarma, Chairperson of Research at IIMK. The guest of honour, Prof. Keyoor Purani, Chairperson of Technology Business Incubator of IIMK, stressed on the importance of channelizing remittances into entrepreneurial ventures so that Kerala can transform itself from a consumption economy to a production economy. In this connection he referred to IIM Kozhikode LIVE – the business incubator to be launched by the Institute in August would play a significant role.
In his inaugural address, Shri S M N Swamy, Regional Director, Reserve Bank of India, Thiruvananthapuram, spoke on the importance of remittances in reducing India’s reliance on foreign aid and in helping the country’s forex reserves as well as in meeting the current account deficit. He mentioned that India’s forex reserves of more than $360 billion and import cover of more than a year would be adequate in managing the temporary effects of the recent Brexit if at all there is an impact.
The technical sessions featured a number of distinguished experts such as Prof Irudaya Rajan of CDS Thiruvananthapuram, Shri R.S. Kannan, CEO of NORKA Roots, Dr V K Vijayakumar, Investment Strategist, Geojit Securites, Shri S. Adikesavan, CGM of State Bank of Travancore, Dr Ajit, D., former Director of RBI, Prof Sthanu Nair of IIMK, Shri K. I. Varghese, CGM of Federal Bank, Shri A. Sony, DGM of South Indian Bank, Smt Dhanya, V., Assistant Adviser of RBI and Prof Shubhasis Dey of IIMK. The speakers gave their views on the high dependence of Kerala’s economy on private remittances and the consequent concerns. The speakers felt that remittances help in poverty alleviation, economic and political empowerment of recipients but the reintegration of returning migrants poses a challenge. While there are long term adverse implications of over reliance on remittances for psychological and social problems faced by the people, remittances provide a stable source of external income and need to be channelized properly. This would be possible with an improvement in the ease of doing business in Kerala which can help entrepreneurship and job creation. The audience was able to participate in the discussions by sharing their perspectives and getting their questions answered.

Press note || International Yoga Day celebrated at WeSchool

to give a message of peace, harmony and development of inner strengths for a balanced work-life through the ancient Indian  science

Welingkar Institute of Management and Research (WeSchool) took the lead once again by celebrating   International Yoga Day with its students, faculty and staff members at the Mumbai campus. The WeTeam got together under the leadership of Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe, Group Director on the bright morning to relive the moments of inner peace and harmony. With PM Modi taking center-stage by leading more than 30,000 participants at Rajpath last year, International Yoga Day has become a mega-event that’s celebrated across the globe. The young teachers from Yoga Sadhana Kendra (YSK)  familiarized all participants from WeSchool  in the finer aspects of the ancient Indian philosophy as they guided them through the various Asanas and Breathing techniques during the one hour session.
Apart from having a well-equipped Gym in its basement, WeSchool has also set aside a large hall called ‘Nirvana’ and appointed professionally trained teachers from the Kendra  to encourage its MBA students, faculty and staff to make Yoga a part of their lifestyle, for developing a balanced mind, body and soul. Yoga has thus become an integral part of WeSchool's teaching-learning environment for the last 16 years.

Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe, Group Director WeSchool, fitness, sports and adventure enthusiast and a Yoga practitioner himself said,” The benefits of yoga are different for each individual. With exercise, meditation, relaxations, recovering from injuries are some of them, Yoga really helps the MBA students in decluttering the mind, find inner focus and stay centered on life goals and priorities in their fast paced and stressful lives. It helps our Global Citizen leaders to handle the lows as well as highs in this extremely competitive world that is full of ambiguities. Yoga is an excellent tool to learn to create a fine balance between work and life, through discipline, commitment and patience and keep moving towards one’s goals.”

It is seen that Corporates that offer yoga and wellness program to their employees not only have a healthy, energetic and more productive workforce that results in lesser turnover of manpower and better customer service. They are   also able also reduce their annual health insurance premiums and expenses towards medical bills of employees thereby contributing to an improved bottom line. With millions of people discovering the benefits of Yoga which include fitness and physical well-being but more importantly, inner peace and mental balance; B schools across the globe are also appreciating the value of Yoga in the stressful lives of their young MBA students. Harvard Business School, Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business and even MIT’s Sloan School of Management are strong advocates of Yoga with Yoga Clubs and classes offering stretching, exercises, meditation, and stress relief for the high-pressure MBAs.

Education Ministry of Maharashtra and ConnectEd Technologies announce ‘EkShiksha’ campaign for rural schools across state

Schools to get solar-powered ‘Smart Classroom Systems’ allowing teachers to
augment conventional teaching practices with tailor-made educational content

Mumbai, 16th June 2016: The Education Ministry of Maharashtra and ConnectEd Technologies, an education-technology start-up that creates hyper-scalable, rural-focused solutions, today launched a campaign, named ‘EkShiksha’. The campaign aims at uniting socially-responsible corporates, NGOs, school managements and grass-root level educators to eliminate the educational inequity and provide world-class education to children studying in rural schools across the state.

Under the aegis of this campaign, rural schools will be equipped with ConnectEd Technologies’ ‘Smart Classroom System’, which is a robust, solar-powered, teacher-aid product that works flawlessly in demanding rural conditions and enables educators to easily integrate tailor-made multimedia educational content into conventional teaching practices, thereby improving learning environment and academic performance in rural classrooms.

The campaign launch also marked the inauguration of ConnectEd Technologies’ maiden project in the Palghar region of Maharashtra, which is the model of development to be followed by the ‘EkShiksha’ initiative. To execute this project, ConnectEd Technologies successfully garnered support of the Education Ministry of Maharashtra, Dewan Housing Finance Ltd. (DHFL), school managements and educators in Palghar to deploy sixty ‘Smart Classroom Systems’ across an array of rural schools.

Expressing his best wishes, Shri. Vinod Tawde, Hon’ble Education Minister of Maharashtra, said, “It gives me immense pleasure to announce the ‘EkShiksha’ campaign for rural schools across the state. Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi launched the Digital India programme with the vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy, and this campaign is a step forward in that direction. I hope corporates, NGOs, school managements and teachers will come forward to support ‘EkShiksha’ and the dynamic, young team at ConnectEd Technologies’ spearheading it”

Lehar Tawde, Co-Founder, ConnectEd Technologies, added, "As far as the rural education system is concerned, it’s time the focus moved from improving student enrolment to enhancing education delivery. ‘EkShiksha’ aims at providing children in rural schools with equal access to world-class education, as currently enjoyed by their urban and semi-urban counterparts; with rural-focused technology playing the medium of delivery. We are immensely thankful to Dewan Housing Finance Ltd. (DHFL) for sponsoring deployment of our model project in Palghar and hope for a similar response from industry at-large”

Kapil Wadhawan, CMD, DHFL, said, "DHFL has been stead-fast in its corporate commitment to enable people lead better lives by giving access to affordable housing finance. Education is key to better living, which is why we are focusing on its enhancement through our CSR activities. It gives me immense pleasure to support the model project of this innovative rural education campaign by the Education Ministry of

Maharashtra and ConnectEd Technologies. I sincerely hope corporates across industry-lines step forward to support ‘EkShiksha’ across Maharashtra”

The first phase of ‘EkShiksha’ will focus on enhancing educational infrastructure in some of the most densely populated Government, Government-aided and Tribal Welfare schools across every district in Maharashtra; followed by digitization of education delivery across all schools in the state. The campaign primarily focuses on densely populated schools as these are institutions with the most urgent requirement for education-technology solutions that promise improvement in teaching outcomes.

About ConnectEd Technologies

Founded last year, ConnectEd Technologies aims at enabling Indian youth – particularly those in rural areas – by making quality educational and vocational training content accessible to them using technology. Within this short span of time, our efforts have garnered extensive support by the State Government of Maharashtra and leading corporates alike, resulting in our maiden project in the Palghar region of Maharashtra impacting thousands of school students.

Due to poor internet penetration across rural and semi-rural areas, we currently use the offline route to disseminate tailor-made educational content to rural audiences and measure their performance. However, efforts by the Government, telecom operators and ISPs, coupled with the entry of low-cost, internet-ready mobiles are expected to boost internet usage, and we seek to soon launch a series of web-based products to provide easy access to our content and an adaptive learning environment.

Our plan is to walk alongside the masses as they step online; becoming an integrated solutions’ provider that not only serves world-class educational and vocational training content to enhance the potential of Indian youth, but enables industry to make smart human resource choices, by providing them access to individuals whose measured competencies match their requirements.

With two leading partners in the field of education and compliance, CII took the lead by recognizing the need for formal instruction on topics related to ethics and compliance as per the recommendation by its National Committee on Integrity & Transparency in Governance to assist the Indian industry to be more competitive and compliant.

GE defines and measures corporate ethical standards, recognizes companies that excel, and promote best practices in corporate ethics, for 10 years in a row, has a reputation of being a leader in compliance management.   It will provide technical content and practical industry expertise and experience for the Progarmme.

ISB, a premier management institute that has set new benchmarks in executive education in India will augment the course with its excellent management faculty as compliance officers step up to take their place as senior management as part of its Centre for Executive Education (CEE) portfolio. The faculty will consist of eminent academicians, legal and compliance experts and industry, both local and global.

Congratulating the three institutions for launching the initiative, Dr. T.M. Bhasin, Vigilance Commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), said, “As India strengthens its position in the world economy and becomes an important destination for international players, it will become important to highlight adherence to global norms, strong corporate governance and transparency in daily functioning. This programme can go on to play a pivotal role in that journey. I congratulate CII, GE and ISB in their attempt to step forward and champion this cause.”
Announcing the collaboration, Dr. Naushad Forbes, President, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Co-Chairman of Forbes Marshall, said, “The business environment in India is undergoing a significant transformation characterized by increased regulatory enforcement, government scrutiny and market uncertainties. Therefore, more than ever before companies are expected to adhere to the highest standards of corporate governance by shifting focus on ensuring long term sustainability. The CII National Committee on Integrity & Transparency in Governance is focused on promoting the agenda of ethical business practices. We believe that companies will benefit immensely from the Compliance Management Programme by equipping their management with the skills and exposure to establish and develop necessary norms that will improve ethical practices and transparency in business. Professionals who undertake this course and apply the learning outcomes will take themselves and their organizations one step closer to becoming good corporate citizens.”

The ‘Compliance Management Programme’, is a two-phased 10-day long programme aimed at providing participants with proven practical tips and techniques on how to best convert theory into practice and ensure ethical and compliant behavior in their respective companies. Besides theoretical discussions and lectures, the Compliance Management Programme includes practical sessions such as case studies, simulations and exercises which will provide participants with the wherewithal to understand the elements of an effective compliance program and the considerations to be mindful of while implementing the same.
Commenting on the MoU signing, Professor Rajendra Srivastava, Dean, ISB, said, “In an increasingly complex and dynamic business environment where corporate decisions are in the public and global scrutiny, the requirement for good corporate governance, and its impact on business performance among Indian corporates has never been greater than today. However, while ethics forms a portion of the management education curriculum, few programmes exist that assist company management design policies and processes to ensure ethical and fair business practices. We at the ISB are pleased to offer just such a programme in partnership with CII and GE, which will help transform the way businesses are run in India.  The course is perfectly aligned to ISB’s goal of balancing theory with practice and imparting education that will impact scholarship, practice and policy. We firmly believe that participants of this course will, in the years to come, contribute significantly in turning around the global perception of doing business in India.”

Companies that build credibility with customers and government are ones which not only deliver on quality and financial performance but also on corporate governance and ethical business practices. GE has always actively promoted the creation of a fair and ethical business environment amongst all its stakeholders and is delighted to partner with CII and ISB to offer this programme.
