Press Release : Youth4work Helping NSDC-PMKVY Campaign by Increasing Employment Opportunities for Rural Students

According to reports, only 45% of the people who were trained in the Phase 1 of the PMKVY are placed till now. Mr Rachit Jain, Founder & CEO shared, “The major reason is the gaps in the Skilling — Assessing — Placement process. In order to overcome the hurdle, it’s requisite that firstly, the youth is given a platform to practice the skills. Secondly, the training centers must connect with recognized companies to be able to meet job opportunities for skilled people. We at http://www.youth4work.com/ aim to serve not just the training centers but more importantly the students residing in rural areas as they often lack privileges.”

In order to prepare students for qualifying PMKVY certifications, 1500+ training centers are actively leveraging Youth4work, an online ‘People Platform’ which empowers youth to assess themselves, improve their talents and showcase themselves.
Hope you will incorporate the same.

Media Release Worker productivity can be enhanced up to 12% by increasing the level of cooling comfort at workplace, says study by IIM-A professors

July 4, 2016: A study conducted by Prof Dheeraj Sharma and Prof Rajesh Chandwani of IIM Ahmedabad on “Heat Stress and its effect on Psychological Aspects of Workers in India” suggests that there is a direct correlation of thermal comfort at work place and its effect on productivity of the workers. The research also highlights the urgent need for the policymakers and concerned organisations to extend the scope of climate change and ambient temperature discourse to include workers’ concerns.

Concerns about heat stress have become especially relevant with deteriorating climatic conditions. Tropical countries like India are likely to suffer the most from health hazards and productivity losses due to rising temperatures. Studies have shown that heat stress can not only cause physical health hazards but can also have negative impact on the mental and psychological health of the workers and hence it calls for immediate attention by state and central government, policy makers, employee welfare bodies and organizations to address this issue. The insights of the study holds significant importance as the Indian government is attempting to emphasize the growth of manufacturing sector through ‘Make in India’ initiative for sustainable growth in the economy.

“Little attention has been devoted to the effect of increasing temperatures on worker productivity and health. Our study attempts to quantify the improvement in productivity that can be gained through establishment of cooling solutions at indoor workplaces. Indeed, according to our study, worker productivity can be enhanced up to 12% by increasing the level of thermal comfort at the workplace,” said Prof Dheeraj Sharma, IIM–Ahmedabad.

“Though there is substantial evidence that extreme temperatures in the workplace can adversely affect performance, there is little consensus regarding an ideal temperature at workplace. The optimal temperature for worker performance may vary. However, in the tropical countries, most of the studies have found that the optimal range of ambient temperature for enhanced worker productivity is about 25- 30 degree Celsius,” said Prof Rajesh Chandwani, IIM-Ahmedabad.

Key insights from the study

The rising environmental and the workplace temperatures due to climate change has been a major concern for a decade now. The recent UNDP report (UNDP 2016) reiterates the fact that higher workplace temperatures will lead to significant loss of productivity-  If the global temperature change continues at 4 degrees Celsius (business as usual), India will lose about 13.60% of daylight work hours by 2085 for work at 300 W. Our study attempts to quantify the improvement in productivity that can be gained through establishment of cooling solutions at indoor workplaces. The insights are significant as the Government is attempting to emphasize the growth of manufacturing sector through ‘Make in India’ initiative for sustainable growth in the economy.

Following are the key insights from the study

1. Worker productivity can be enhanced by up to 12 per cent by increasing the level of thermal comfort at the workplace.

2. The study emphasizes the regulatory support for preventive measures such as use of Information and communication technologies and other technologies for encouraging modernized agricultural practices.

3. Regulatory bodies should encourage environment friendly and feasible measures for cooling solutions such as high capacity industrial coolers, solar panel driven cooling

4. Organizations, especially those which employ machineries that lead to increased workplace temperature such as textile industry, bakeries, steel need to monitor the ambient temperature at workplace regularly and

5. Such organizations should provide for cooling solutions, wherever feasible, to reduce the workplace ambient temperature.

6. The organizations should regularly monitor the employees’ morale and psychological state at workplace to make sense of and address the workers’ concerns regarding effects of workplace temperature.

7. The organizations need to invest in
  • Educating the workers about heat stress and its effect on physical health,
  • Training on methods to mitigate the effects of heat stress
  • Ensure supply & encourage the use of PPE (Personal protective equipment).

8. Provide additional facilities at workplace such as plenty of drinking water and other hydrating solutions, and ensure appropriate clothing, for preventing heat related health hazards like dehydration.

Press Release: "Seminar examines need for a global edge to higher education"

Seminar examines need for a global edge to higher education

Mumbai, June 30, 2016: Practical training during the course of taking a degree, strong industry connect and the need to remove the association of “skilling up” with labour in order to bring it into mainstream education – these were the traits that panel experts more or less agreed upon during a seminar on the need for a global edge to media studies, held at St Pauls Institute of Communication Education on Tuesday.
Among those who spoke were Carol Andrade, veteran journalist and Dean of the Institute, Mahrukh Inayat, roving editor with Headlines Today, and Dr Pratibha Jain, managing director of Eduabroad. More than 100 students from several city colleges attended.

Carol Andrade spoke of the way the demand for college education had grown steadily since Independence , and had virtually exploded since liberation in the mid-nineties, with more than 8 million students on the roles of more than 8,000 colleges in 261 universities.
In spite of this, 8 million students are going abroad every year to study, spending nearly $13 billion in the process. And most of these are students from middle class families, searching for that global edge that will make them fit for the workplace in an age when technology has shrunk the globe. Hence there was a need to globalize education here at home, seeing that there was such a heavy demand.

Mahrukh Inayat talked about her own experience, studying television journalism at the American University in New York and returning to work in the electronic medium back in India where her training literally gave her an edge over others, making her a stand-out journalist comfortable in the modern newsroom. She spoke of the emphasis on doing, the encouragement given to critical thinking and added, “With the explosion of social media and digital platforms, it becomes even more critical to understand the role of mass media education. Today any kind of information is being passed off as news and the process of checks and balances that would normally be a part of everyday reportage are also changing.”

Dr. Pratibha Jain made a strong case for understanding the role that technology plays in accessing higher education, both for students and teachers, and urged the audience to make use of social media practically and profitably. She also declared that students themselves should find out exactly what they want to do and examine whether they wanted to start out with the burden of an educational loan incurred to study abroad, when online courses were freely and affordably available. She also said that there was a crying need to internationalize education here at home, and that a beginning had already been made, with colleges offering courses on the digital platform and exchange taking place at both teacher and student levels, mostly in the private sector.

Last of all, Dr. Dominic D’Silva, Director of St Pauls Institute, revealed that the establishment had tied up with Deakin University of Australia to offer a two-year Masters of Communication through its campuses in Mumbai and Bengaluru. It has been designed especially for those who aim for careers in journalism, PR, corporate communications and advertising. The advantage accruing to students is that they would receive an internationally-recognized degree at one-third of the course fee. At the same time, it will be possible to opt to do one or both semesters in the final year at the Deakin Campus itself, by paying the on-campus fee.

The design of the course focuses on prior learning in various media fields within the domestic scenario, while skilling with the global systems, processes and best practices from Australia . Emphasis will be given on learning from Industry experts, participation in live case studies, placing the students in internships in leading organizations and guidance from the best faculty in India . “Our students will have the edge because they will be trained to be successful in the Indian environment with a degree from one of the best universities of the world The Master of Communication program fills the void for students aspiring to be successful in journalism, public relations, advertising, corporate communications, public affairs, etc” said institute director Dr. (Fr) Dominic D'Silva.

Deakin University has been ranked among the top 150 universities in the world for communication both by Times Higher Education (THE) and 2016 QS subject rankings. St Pauls Institute of Communication Education is an up and coming establishment already known for its Post Graduate programmes in Journalism and Advertising, both of which emphasis first class faculty, and state of the art infrastructure in its Mumbai campus.
