SVIMS organizes seminar on Corporate Social Responsibility
Chairman
Justice BN Srikrishna urges B-Schools to integrate an understanding of
social responsibility along with management education for enabling
students to be more socially responsible managers of tomorrow
Mumbai, 11th March, 2013: In
today’s times, when more and more conflicts emerge between a corporate
and its publics, the aspect of social responsibility has become much
more relevant and business schools, by making Corporate Social
Responsibility or CSR as a subject of relevance could actually make a
huge difference, was the message that one could take away from the
seminar organized by SVIMS (Sir Visvesaraya Institute of Management
Studies & Research) on Saturday in Mumbai.
The
seminar was inaugurated by Chairman of SVIMS Justice BN Srikrishna, who
also happens to be an eminent lawyer and former Supreme Court justice,
who chaired the Srikrishna Commission and sixth pay commission and is a
champion of many causes on social responsibility.
According to Justice Srikrishna, CSR is simply putting the interests of the public before the corporate interest in all aspects.
According
to him today in the corporate world CSR or Corporate Social
Responsibility is often equated to charity, a mere act of opening a
school or a hospital or donation to religious institutions, and nothing
more. CSR is not charity work for others, but to assume responsibility
for any undue fall outs while the business enterprise is carrying on its
business. It is also to prevent damage to the environment and thereby
the damage to the future of the very Society whom the business intends
to benefit. Thus CSR becomes an important element in training the
managers for future businesses.
The
corruption, violence, distrust that takes place in today’s world in
general and corporate place in particular is mainly due to a lack of
sense of responsibility of an individual to his fellow beings.
For a manager, his alma mater - his B-School, is his real home, where this understanding, to be responsible to his society, has to be deeply enshrined in him.
“I
therefore feel that CSR should be a subject of intensive study in
B-Schools, and if even 25% of the B-school students practice CSR the way
they have experienced at their alma mater, it will make a huge
difference to the society and environment,” he said.
SVIMS
has pledged that the institute will evolve with CSR as its foundation
and an emphasis will be given to make management socially responsible
and relevant.
Internationally, several schools have been integrating the culture of social responsibility with management education. INSEAD, the France-based school, has a centre for social innovation and a course for social entrepreneurship. Kellogg, in Chicago, also has a centre for social entrepreneurship.
