Jamia Hamdard University has appointed Dr. Habil Khorakiwala as its new
Chancellor. Dr. Habil Khorakiwala will occupy the esteemed position for
a period of 5 years beginning December 2014. Dr. Habil Khorakiwala is
the Chairman of Wockhardt Group, India’s leading healthcare conglomerate
with presence across Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology, and Super
Speciality Hospitals.
Talking on the appointment, Dr. Habil Khorakiwala, said, “I
intend to create a vision for the Jamia Hamdard University - to be at
the forefront of imparting right education and knowledge in the 21st century.”
Now
a deemed University, the history of Jamia Hamdard goes way back with
the establishment of a small Unani clinic in the year 1906 by Hakeem
Hafiz Abdul Majeed, one of the well-known practitioners of Unani System
of Medicine of his time. It was conceived as a seat of higher learning
in Unani Medicine, Islamic Studies, Biosciences, Pharmacy, Nursing and
other areas of knowledge by its founder as a means of fulfilling the
objects of the wakf, a property dedicated to the society. The
foundation stone of Jamia Hamdard was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in
1962 and Rajiv Gandhi inaugurated the University in May 1989. Over the
last ten years, Jamia Hamdard has emerged as an outstanding institution
of higher learning with distinct and focused academic programmes.
Besides having a medical college and health care facility, it also has
Graduate programmes in Information Technology and Computer Applications
and Post-graduate programmes in Information Technology, Computer
Applications, Business Management, Physiotherapy and Occupational
Therapy have been started. Undergraduate programmes in Physiotherapy and
Occupational Therapy are being introduced from this year. Jamia Hamdard
offers Post-Graduate and Doctoral programmes in several disciplines for
which advanced facilities are available.
Every
year, around 6000 bright minds pass from the various streams of the
University. Of which, around 1500 are doctorate students. The male to
female student ratio stands 40:60; the university also houses around 450
international students from 34 developing and developed countries of
Asia and Africa. The University has seven hostels for boys and girls
offering hostel facilities to its students. The University also has a
fully equipped hospital, equipped with all modern diagnostic equipments,
for providing medical facilities, to its students, employees and
outsiders.
Dr. G. N. Qazi, Vice Chancellor, Jamia Hamdard University, said, “We
are indeed happy that Dr. Habil Khorakiwala has accepted to be the
Chancellor of our University. With his established leadership and
interest in science and technology, the University would benefit from
his direction and guidance.”
Dr. Habil Khorakiwala, an alumnus of Purdue University and Harvard Business School, he was honoured and bestowed by the Purdue University, their prestigious title of ‘Distinguished Alumnus’ for significant contribution to the Profession of Pharmacy. In
March 2010 Purdue University further honoured him with their highest
award they offer, the Honorary Doctorate for distinguished service to
the University and great achievements in career and life. He
is the only non-American in the 125 year history of the University to
be awarded Honorary Doctorate by the Pharmacy School. He is also a
recipient of the prestigious Shiromani
Vikas Award for his ‘Outstanding and Inspiring Contribution towards
National Development’ received at the hands of Mother Teresa (1992). He
has also served as the President of FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers
of Commerce & Industry) and IPA (Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance),
and has sat on the board of several prestigious advisory boards for the
Government of India.
Dr. Habil Khorakiwala has also served as the Honorary Consul General of Sweden in Mumbai.
