IIHMR Becomes the Only Health Management Research University in India
In talks with the Afghanistan Government for rebuilding health services in the country

June, 2014: A globally recognised and leading healthcare research organisation of the country, Indian Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR), has
now become the only health management research university in India.
Established in the year 1984, IIHMR has contributed more than 30 years
of excellence in creating a niche in providing high quality research,
education and training in the areas of Health Management and Hospital
Management. IIHMR has made phenomenal contributions in health systems
research, capacity building and creating a critical mass of
professionally trained managers for health systems.
Dr. SD Gupta, President of IIHMR University
said, “IIHMR University, has striven to fulfil the need for promoting
research and innovations in health systems within the framework of the
National Health Policy of the Government of India. We have conducted
more that 500 research studies focused on management of health sector
and about 1500 alumni are manning hospitals and health care organization
in private and public sectors at national and international levels.
IIHRM has organised training and capacity building programmes at
national and international level and nearly 10,000 policy makers, health
administrators and programme managers at various levels in India and
abroad have benefitted from these programmes. Research being our focus
and a strong area, IIHMR has been involved in conducting NFHS to
generate evidence for policy and program strengthening. IIHMR has
conducted NFHS-3 for Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and recently it has
been awarded NFHS-4 for Madhya Pradesh (east), Chattisgarh and
Uttarakhand.”
Mr. ML Mehta, Chairman of IIHMR University said, “We have been designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre for district health system based on primary health care.
IIHMR has created a wide network of research and academic institutes
interested in public health research and management. We have played a
leading role in the formation of South East Asia Public Health Education
Institutions Network and also its Indian affiliate. We have working
relationship with UNICEF, USAID, UNFPA, Futures Group and many more
national and international organisations.”
Professor Sodani, Dean of IIHMR University said, “We have been recognized as Institute of Excellence by
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India for training and
capacity building of human resources for health sector. Our short-term
training programs are on Leadership and Strategic Management, Program
Management, Program Evaluation Quality Management in Hospitals and
Health Care, Disaster Management, Hospital Management, and Rational Use
of Drugs. Participants from South East Asia Region come at IIHMR to
undergo the management training from globally recognized faculty of the
IIHMR University.”
Prof.
Sodani added, “Government of India has also identified us as a
collaborating institute for conducting 10 weeks Professional Development
Course (PDC) in Management, Public Health and Health Sector Reforms for
District Medical Officers and more than 235 doctors of Rajasthan have
been trained under this course. Recently, with support from WHO, the
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India nominated 92
officials to undergo one-month training on “Public Private Partnership
in Health” at IIHMR Jaipur. Apart from this, we have conducted
management research for improving maternal and child health programmes,
adolescent health programs, reproductive health programs and other
National Health Programs.
The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN),
Geneva has selected IIHMR as the only Project Management Unit in the
State of Rajasthan to implement the Food Fortification Project. Under
the project IIHMR has signed MoUs with various dairy companies, edible
oil brands and wheat flour brands which have extensively benefitted more
than 8.5 million individuals on a monthly basis through milk
fortification and more than 80,000 individuals through wheat flour
fortification. To generate awareness on Food Fortification and its
benefits, IIHMR has conducted sensitisation program for over 250
doctors.
IIHMR’s
work in Afghanistan, in monitoring and evaluation of health system has
been a great success in rebuilding health services and improving health
status of the people in the country. The Afghanistan Morality Survey
conducted by IIHMR is a unique model of large scale nationwide survey
that provides the latest and the most authentic health information about
Afghanistan. IIHMR is in talks with the Government of Afghanistan to
bid for another round of the project after the success of the
Afghanistan Mortality Survey. IIHMR has also conducted program
evaluations of TB Prevention and control, HIV/AIDS, Leprosy, Malaria,
and Blindness and has made significant contributions in strategies,
reorganization of program implementation mechanism design and monitoring
systems.
