Scientists converge at Thapar University, deliberate advancements in metrology
· Over
150 delegates from various research institutions, industrial
establishments and academia are participating in the three-day national
conference, being organised in association with Metrology Society of

Mumbai, February 19, 2014: Being
hosted by Thapar University in association with the Metrology Society
of India, northern region, the third national conference on “Advances in
Metrology” (AdMet-2014) got underway on the university campus here on
Wednesday.
More
than 150 delegates from various research institutions, industrial
establishments and academia are participating in the three-day
conference, which will revolve around the theme “Sensors for
Metrological, Environment, Health and Safety Applications”.
“The
conference intends to highlight and discuss the technological
advancements in the areas of measurement, sensor modelling and
fabrication, and their applications in diverse areas of science and
engineering,” said AdMet-2014 convener Prof Ravinder Agarwal, a professor at the Department of Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering, Thapar University.
Prominent
among those taking part in the conference are Prof RC Budhani,
Director, Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) National
Physical Laboratory, New Delhi and the chief guest at the event; Dr
Chandra Shekhar, Director, CSIR Central Electronics Engineering Research
Institute, Pilani; Anil Relia, Director, National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL),
New Delhi; BN Dixit, Director, Legal Metrology Department; Harrish
Bajaj, Director, Mitutoyo South Asia Pvt Ltd, New Delhi; Matthias
Bundschuh from WIKA Alexander WIEGAND SE & Co. KG, Germany; Peter
Andrews from ASL WIKA Instruments Calibration Technology, United Kingdom
and Dr Girish Aren, Director, MACWIN, New Delhi.
Many
leading companies like Mitutoyo South Asia, Wika, Fluke India, MACWIN
India, BioPac Systems Inc, Measurement International LLP, C&I
Calibration and Adage Medical Systems will put up technical exhibitions
at the conference to give practical demonstrations of the applications
in the fields of measurement, sensor modelling and fabrication.
Terming
measurement as the hallmark of all sciences, Thapar University Director
and Chief Patron of the conference Prof Prakash Gopalan said, “With the
advent of sophisticated technologies, there is an upsurge of interest
among scientists and researchers to devise more and more precise
measurement techniques in all scientific domains. This mega event
provides a platform for scientific exchange of ideas between scientists,
metrologists, academicians and engineers so as to evolve effective and
efficient measurement systems.”
While
inaugurating the conference, Thapar University Deputy Director Prof KK
Raina said the amalgamation of ideas emerging from this conference would
ignite young minds to design and devise low-cost measurement systems
with high precision so as to cater to the needs of even the economically
weaker sections of the society.
The
conference was preceded by a tutorial on Tuesday, where experts from
the industry and research organisations threw light on the basics of
metrology.
